How I Reduce Plastic in My Daily Life (Without Going Crazy)
I always wanted to reduce plastic, but honestly, the “zero plastic lifestyle” on Instagram looked too extreme. So I took a different route — slow, simple, and realistic. Today, without any strict rules, I’ve cut down a surprising amount of plastic from my daily life.
Here are the exact habits I personally follow, and trust me — all of them are easy enough for anyone to start right away.
1. I switched to reusable bags permanently
This is the easiest change ever. I keep 2–3 cloth bags permanently in my vehicle and one foldable bag in my daily backpack.
Result: I haven’t taken a plastic bag from a shop in months.

2. Steel bottle everywhere I go
A simple steel bottle saved me from buying packaged water when I’m outside. It’s cheaper, healthier and obviously prevents tons of plastic bottles.
3. Replacing plastic containers slowly
I didn’t throw away anything. But whenever a plastic box cracked or faded, I replaced it with:
- Steel containers
- Glass jars
- Glass bottles
My kitchen now looks neater and feels more organised too.

4. Avoiding individually packed snacks
This was tough — but worth it. Packaged chips, biscuits, and namkeen produce so much plastic waste.
Now I keep:
- Homemade snacks
- Nuts & dry fruits
- Fruits
Not only is this eco-friendly — it’s healthier too.
5. Natural cleaning instead of chemical bottles
This is my favourite part of reducing plastic. Once I switched to natural DIY cleaners, I stopped buying 5–6 plastic bottles every month.

6. Bathroom swaps that actually worked for me
I didn’t change everything — just a few practical swaps:
- Refillable soap bottle instead of buying new ones
- Mild shampoo bars
- Metal razor instead of plastic razor heads
These changes alone reduced so many empty plastic bottles.
Final thoughts — start small, stay consistent
You don’t need perfection. You don’t need to be zero-waste. Just start with one small habit and stick with it.
Even reducing 20% of your plastic is a huge win — for your home and the planet.
